About Tyler

Tyler's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey began in October 2017, when he started training under Scott Clawson. What began as an interest in martial arts became a passion and a commitment to personal growth. In 2018, he earned his blue belt.

Later in 2018, he began training at Evolution Fitness of Concord, where he continued developing his skills under Shawn Burton and Rubao Carioca. He earned his purple belt in March 2021.

Later that same year, his former instructor, Mike Powell, opened Honest Grappling, which became Tyler's home and where he continues to train. Under Mike's guidance, he earned his brown belt, growing as a practitioner and as an instructor and mentor.

His goal at Honest Grappling goes beyond teaching Jiu-Jitsu. The gym is working to build an inclusive and welcoming environment where anyone can train, regardless of experience or goals. Whether someone wants to compete, learn practical self-defense, improve their conditioning, or find a positive hobby and community, there is a place for them.

He believes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has something to offer everyone. It teaches discipline, resilience, problem-solving, confidence, and humility, and it is a way to challenge yourself physically and mentally.

At Honest Grappling, the goal is simple: create an atmosphere where people can learn, grow, and become better versions of themselves, on and off the mats.
