Everything you need to know before you step on the mat at Honest Grappling Company in Kannapolis, NC.

Getting started

Do I need any experience to start?

No. Our programs are designed for every level, from first-timers to seasoned competitors. Everyone starts somewhere, and our coaches will meet you where you are.

Is my first week really free?

Yes. Your first week is free. We don't want anyone feeling pressured to sign up on their first day. Come out, meet the team, get a feel for the room, and if you decide to join, we will go from there.

How do I get started?

Create your free account through our signup page, pick a class on the schedule, and show up a few minutes early. You can also call 980-440-0931 or email admin@honestgrappling.com with any questions.

Do I need to be in shape before I start?

No. Jiu-Jitsu is how you get in shape. Train at your own pace and let your conditioning build over time.

Am I too old to start Jiu-Jitsu?

No. People start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at every age. Technique and leverage matter more than size or athleticism, and you control the intensity of your own training.

Classes & training

What programs do you offer?

We offer adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the Gi and No-Gi, Kids Jiu-Jitsu, Homeschool Grappling, a Competition Team, and open mat. Massage therapy is also available through Meghan Phinney.

What is the difference between Gi and No-Gi?

Gi training uses the traditional uniform of a heavy jacket, pants, and belt, which allows grips on the fabric. No-Gi training uses a rash guard and shorts, moves at a faster pace, and relies more on body control and wrestling-style grips. We teach both.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu good for self-defense?

Yes. Our adult program combines sport technique with reality-based self-defense grounded in law enforcement and military applications, taught by coaches with backgrounds in Army combatives, policing, MMA, and competition.

Do you offer training for law enforcement?

Yes. Our adult membership covers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and LEO training, and our schedule includes Adopt-A-Cop fundamentals classes. Coach Ramsey Nimer is a Kannapolis Police patrol officer and Level 3 Army Combatives Instructor. Contact us for details.

Do you have a competition team?

Yes. Our Competition Team offers intensive training for athletes who want to test themselves, led by coaches with extensive MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition experience.

When are classes?

Classes run throughout the week with morning, midday, and evening sessions. Times change from time to time, so check the live class schedule for the current week.

Will I get hurt?

Jiu-Jitsu is a contact sport, but training is controlled. You tap when you are caught, your partner lets go, and coaches manage the intensity of the room. Our culture is disciplined, accountable, and family-oriented, and taking care of your training partners comes first.
